Tyler Ward is sitting behind a drum kit in a moderately sized band rehearsal space at the San Diego branch of the School of Rock in Liberty Station’s arts district. That he does so with such consistency and conviction - and with such a strong three-chord beat - is to be commended.The School of Rock isn’t just about learning how to play an instrument, it’s also about learning how to be a good bandmate and a respectful person in general. Mellencamp may never be recognized as one of his era's great talents, but it is undeniable that his is a voice that speaks for many of the disenfranchised of his generation. Not only did he provide a solid evening of entertainment, he did it most likely out of his own pocket. But it certainly couldn't have been for profit, and for that, Mellencamp is to be lauded. The biggest question surrounding Mellencamp's one-night performance at the Fillmore was why? Why would an artist of such stature play a single night in such a small setting? Undoubtedly it had to do at least partially to the prestige of playing in a venue that had previously showcased such renowned acts as Cream and Jimi Hendrix. His songs bring forth the music of both Bill Monroe and Jerry Lee Lewis. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yet he is able to weave a rural, countryfied feel into the most basic song structures. Mellencamp is the product of a small town, Seymour, Ind., and his approach to music never strays beyond his main influences, James Brown and the Rolling Stones. For an established arena rocker like Mellencamp to use the full force of his band on such a small stage is a powerful tool, one not lost upon those fortunate enough to see him in such an intimate venue. Mellencamp's strength has always been his working class identification, and his second song, "Jack and Diane," established his blue-collar roots right from the beginning, with the beautifully simple and inclusive lines, "sucking on a chili dog, behind the Tastee Freeze." This is an artist that knows his audience well enough to segue into a rocking version of "Lonely Ol' Night," which lit up the relatively small stage in a major way. Happy Go Lucky." In fact, he played very few tunes from his most recent record as he tore though an evening of some of his strongest material.
